Graduated in Biology by the University of Aveiro in 2000, Master in Cell Biology by the University of Coimbra in 2003 and PhD in Health Sciences - Biomedical Sciences, by Universidade Católica Portuguesa in 2012. He has been teaching in the Dental Medicine course (since 2003) and Graduation in Biomedical Sciences (since 2009) in the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (FMD-UCP) in Viseu where he is currently Assistant Professor.
He is a researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS) in the SalivaTec Platform and is responsible for Computational Biomedicine at SalivaTec laboratory. Its current main research interests are in the identification of salivary biomarker panels by in silico studies using bioinformatics tools developed in our group (SalivaTecDB, OralInt and SalivaPrint Toolkit) and their subsequent validation by using state of the art technology and know-how for protein, DNA and RNA identification in small saliva sample volumes.
His scientific and pedagogical work has been disseminated by the scientific community through book chapters, articles in international and national journals with peer review, monographs, theses and reports, bioinformatics tools, oral communications and panel communications at national and international scientific meetings.
Recently he has applied his research strategies to solve problems related to COVID-19, leading a research project on the diagnosis of COVID-19 in saliva samples.
