1st edition of FMD's photography competition ‘Science and Health The Art of Detail’ launched

The FMD is launching a Photography Competition aimed at students and teachers at the faculty.

Under the theme ‘Science and Health: The Art of Detail’, the competition aims to challenge participants' creativity to record and share the less visible aspects of Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, while also promoting a taste for photography as an artistic expression.

The winning photographs will be honoured and exhibited in the FMD Art Gallery, which will be inaugurated as part of the FMD's 5th Anniversary celebrations.

Science and Health: the Art of Detail 

BACKGROUND  

A photography competition organised annually by the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Portuguese Catholic University, aimed at producing photographs that creatively show the less visible aspects of the field of Dental Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, whether due to their size or complexity of detail. 

This competition is aimed at FMD teachers and students. The submissions will be assessed by a jury and the best photographs will be honoured. 

CHAPTER I  

OBJECTIVES  

1.1 The aim of the competition is to produce photographs on the theme Science and Health - the Art of Detail, focusing on the areas of Dental Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. 

1.3 The competition aims to stimulate a taste for digital photography as an art form through which to promote and publicise Dentistry and its clinical practice and Biomedical Sciences as an area of Health Sciences with a huge diversity of fields of activity. 

1.2 The winning photographs will be exhibited in the FMD Art Gallery.  

CHAPTER II  

PARTICIPANTS  

2.1. The competition is open to FMD teachers and students. 

2.2 No member of the jury may take part in this competition.  

2.3 Categories. Participants can compete individually in one of the following categories:  

Category A: MIMD Students  

Category B: LCB Students  

Category C: MIMD Professor

Category D: LCB Professor 

Category E: Postgraduate students 

 

CHAPTER III  

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR ACCESS AND CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION  

3.1 Each participant may submit only one photograph.  

3.2 Participants must submit their photographs in accordance with the following specifications:  

3.2.1. colour or black and white photographs must be originals.  

3.2.2 The photographs must fit in with the theme of the competition.  

3.2.3 Photographs must not contain the image of people, unless they cannot be identified.  

3.2.4 Digital photographs must have:  

A minimum aspect ratio and resolution of 4913 x 2910 pixels and 300 dpi, in order to be subsequently printed at a size of 130 x 77 cm. The file, in PNG, TIFF or PDF.  

The name of the digital file with the following items: Category/ Author's name/ Photo title.  

3.3 The photographic technique may be digital or analogue (in which case scanning is not dispensed with).  

3.4 The following will not be accepted for the competition  

Previously published photographs; 

Photographs that have been digitally edited, composed or manipulated (except for minor corrections to basic image parameters such as contrast, colour and brightness);  

Photographs produced using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools; 

Photographs with any artifice;  

Panoramic photographs outside the specified format;  

Photographs with borders (white, frames or other);  

Signatures, dates or other data.  

3.5. Participants are responsible for the originality of the photographs submitted, guarantee authorship and assume all liability arising from claims by third parties with regard to copyright and related rights.

CHAPTER IV  

DELIVERY OF WORK  

4.1. Entries must be submitted by 1st November 2024, by filling in the entry form and uploading the respective photograph(s), available at:

CHAPTER V  

JURY  

5.1 The judging criteria will be the creativity, relevance, quality and visual impact of each photograph.  

5.2 The photographs will be assessed by a jury, which will decide on the results by 25 November 2024.  

5.3 The jury will be made up of 5 (five) members: the rector of UCP, 1 representative from the CMV culture or education department, 1 FMD lecturer, 1 FMD student, 1 artist.  

5.4 The jury's decision is sovereign.  

5.5. The jury reserves the right not to award prizes if the lack of quality of the work justifies it.  

5.6. The jury may, if it sees fit, award Honourable Mentions to works that are unanimously deemed worthy of this distinction, which will not necessarily correspond to a monetary award.  

5.7. The photographs will be judged on the following criteria: appropriateness and comprehensiveness of the content in relation to the theme, originality, creativity, quality of the photographs and technical choices.  

 

CHAPTER VI  

PRIZES  

6.1 Prizes will be awarded to the first three places in each of the categories.  

6.2 Prizes.  

Categories A and B - Students 

1st Place: €200 voucher for MIMD/LCB materials and 130x77cm vinyl print of the photo. 

2nd Place: 100€ voucher for MIMD/LCB materials and printing of the photo on 130x77cm vinyl. 

3rd Place: 50€ voucher for MIMD/LCB materials and printing of the photo on vinyl 130x77cm in size 

Categories C and D - Professors

1st Place: Photo printed on 130x77cm vinyl  

2nd Place: Printing of the photograph on vinyl with the dimension 130x77cm 

3rd Place: Print of photo on vinyl 130x77cm 

Categories E - Postgraduate students 

1st Place: Print of the photograph on vinyl with the dimension 130x77cm  

2nd Place: Print of the photograph on vinyl with the dimension 130x77cm 

3rd Place: Photo print on vinyl 130x77cm 

6.3 Winning participants will receive a winner's certificate.  

 

CHAPTER VII  

PUBLICATION OF RESULTS, AWARD CEREMONY AND EXHIBITIONS  

7.1 The list of participants and respective prize-winners will be published on the FMD website.  

7.2 Only the awarded participants will be notified by email. Notification of the acceptance of entries will be made by 11 November, by email to the author's email address provided within the scope of this competition.  

7.3 The awards ceremony will take place on 6 December during the event celebrating the 5th anniversary of the FMD.  

7.4 The exhibition will be on display in the FMD Art Gallery throughout the 2024-25 academic year, although it may continue to be exhibited in subsequent academic years.  

 

CHAPTER VIII  

COPYRIGHT  

8.1. The entrant is the author and owner of the rights to the photograph. However, participation in the competition also implies the transfer of the rights of use (property) of the photographs to FMD-UCP, on a free non-exclusive basis, which means that the author can also continue to use them.  

8.2 The candidate is solely responsible for all the content and media published, namely the authenticity of authorship. 

CHAPTER IX  

GENERAL PROVISIONS  

9.1 Important aspects to take into account in order to take part in the competition:  

Compete in the appropriate category (Chapter II), with only 1 photograph on the competition theme (Chapter I).  

Photographs in digital format must comply with the specifications set out in Chapter III.  

By 1 November 2024, fill in the entry form and upload the respective photograph(s) (Chapter IV), and the name of the digital file must comply with the requested items.  

9.2 Important dates for this competition:  

Opening: 7 October 2024  

Submission: until 1 November 2024  

Acceptance: until 11 November 2024 

Jury assessment: until 25 November 2024 

Awards ceremony: 6 December 2024  

Exhibition: from 6 December 2024  

9.3 Photographs that comply with these regulations will be admitted to the competition.  

9.4 Any cases not covered by these regulations will be resolved by decision of the competition's organising committee.  

9.5 Participation in this competition implies acceptance of all the terms of these regulations.
