Biochemistry and Metabolism

5 ECTS / Semestral / Portuguese

Biochemistry and Metabolism aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in the functioning and regulation of metabolic pathways and their role in functional homeostasis.

The UC will allow the acquisition of skills in identifying, describing, analyzing and integrating current knowledge about:

  1. The metabolism of sugars, lipids, amino acids and nucleotides;
  2. Changes in the regulation of metabolic pathways implicated in some pathologies;
  3. The structure and function of the main enzymes involved in metabolic pathways and their regulatory factors, and the implication of this knowledge in the mechanisms of metabolic regulation and, consequently, in the assessment of potential therapeutic or diagnostic targets.
