Periodontology
Apart from dental caries, periodontal disease is considered to be a highly prevalent pathology worldwide. Periodontology is a medical-dental specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal pathology through the establishment of periodontal therapies adopted for each situation. Periodontal treatments can be simpler, such as scaling (removal of calculus and bacterial plaque) or surgical periodontal approach, always with the aim of improving the patient's oral health.
Oral Medicine
The main objectives of Oral Medicine are to observe, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate all people who have lesions located at the level of the oral cavity. This medical-dental area also has a preponderant role in the early diagnosis of oral cancer as well as the detection of oral manifestations associated to systemic diseases. Oral Medicine acts in an interdisciplinary manner with various other medical areas in order to ensure the appropriate treatment and favourable prognosis in cases of oral pathology.
Oral Surgery
This is a medical-dental speciality that includes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, trauma and other oral problems that can compromise aesthetic and functional aspects of the stomatognathic system. This area essentially includes the exodontia of teeth (simple and impacted), but may also perform biopsies and removal of certain types of oral lesions.
Dentistry
The main purpose of dentistry is the conservation and restoration of teeth through the direct application of restorative materials. Besides the restoration of teeth with dental caries, the objectives of this area also include the replacement of restorations, which can improve function and aesthetics, as well as dental bleaching.
Endodontics
Medical-dental area responsible for the study of the dental pulp, the entire root canal system and periapical tissues, as well as related diseases. In cases of pathology or trauma that affect the dental pulp, there is a need to carry out endodontic treatment, aimed at maintaining the tooth in the oral cavity, and the health of the periapical tissues. Endodontics also has a surgical component with recourse, in some more complex cases, to periapical surgery with the aid of surgical microscopy.
Oral Rehabilitation
Oral rehabilitation covers various areas of dentistry, such as removable prosthetics and fixed prosthetics, as well as occlusion and implantology. Its purpose is to restore the patient's masticatory capacity, recover their functionality, health and aesthetics through the use of dental prostheses. This medical-dental area ranges from diagnosis to treatment planning and rehabilitation using the most sophisticated technological and digital means. Removable Prosthesis is aimed at the replacement of lost teeth and adjacent tissues through a prosthesis which is removed by the patient. In Fixed Prosthesis, it is possible to rehabilitate by placing crowns/cemented bridges on natural teeth or dental implants.
Occlusion
Occlusion is the branch of dental medicine that treats the bite relations between the upper dental arch (upper jaw) and the lower dental arch (mandible) and its implications on the annexed structures. In addition to being closely related to oral rehabilitation, it is also the medical-dental area responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders and is interconnected with sleep medicine.
Paediatric Dentistry
Medical-dental speciality which consists of carrying out all kinds of treatments applicable to a specific population: children. The first consultation in paediatric dentistry should start when the first deciduous teeth erupt. In addition to the treatment of oral pathologies, it is important, starting at a younger age, to instruct and motivate for good oral health habits, this being one of the aims of paediatric dentistry.
Orthodontics
Medical-dental speciality which allows the study, prevention and treatment of problems of growth, development and maturing of the face, the dental arches and occlusion, in other words, dento-facial dysfunctions. As well as diagnosis, orthodontics allows the correction of the position of the teeth and jaw bones which are positioned inappropriately. This is achieved through the use by the patient of orthodontic appliances, fixed and/or removable, suitable for each case.
Community Oral Health
Community Oral Health has as its main goal the implementation of primary prevention strategies focused on oral health promotion and literacy and disease prevention. Community Oral Health is specifically composed of two medical-dental areas: preventive dentistry and gerodontology (elderly population), which allows the definition and application of primary prevention methods in the different age groups through the implementation and participation in various oral health programmes.
